Sunday 14 November 2012 saw the 5th edition of the annual SADGA Rocktober Disc Golf competition being held at Delta Park. Traditionally a Stroke play event over two rounds held in parallel with the annual Ultimate Frisbee Tournament of the same name, this year the format was changed completely.
A team doubles format was played towards a more fun-orientated competition and to attract new and less experienced players. Each team was made up of an experienced player together with a newer, less experienced player. The turnout was enthusiastic with 24 keen disc golfers split into 12 two-person teams playing a single round on the fully basketed New Course. Players alternated drives on each hole followed by “Better Disc” i.e. best lie of team’s subsequent throws for the remaining shots until the hole was completed.
The competition was tight with three shots separating the top 5 teams over the round. Birdies were at a premium and missed short putts scuppered the chances of many of the teams. Whilst conditions were tricky at times, the midway drinks & shooters dispensed by Felicity and Kayla Smith definitely helped to raise the spirits to tackle the rest of the course.
At the end of the day, a strong back 9 with solid putting and 3 birdies resulted in Hilton Fryer and Leigh Gilmour shooting a -1 overall and being crowned 2012 Rocktober Disc Golf Champions. This was a solid two shot victory over the second place finishers, Victor Bongers and Ryan Males on +1.
Andrew & Graeme Sutherland came in third on +2 after winning a tiebreaker against Garron Dace & Ross McGlothlin during the Closest To Pin challenge.
The tournament was followed up with a putting competition, braai and prize giving.
A special thanks to Hilton, Ryan, Brad, Lionel and their families for handling the braais, food and drinks for the day. It was awesome!
